British Values

ASC_0464.jpg

British Values at Dame Janet underpin every aspect of our culturally diverse school, as do our school values.

British Values are more than simply statements, they are a mind-set for all of us.

British Values define our nation. The way we uphold them defines our school.

Democracy

Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard.

At the start of each academic year, all of the children have a vote to decide on the Head Boy and Head Girl of the school. These are then representatives for the school such as meeting guests.

We use questionnaires so that children can share their viewpoints.

The Rule of Law

The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies.

Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education.

Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through PSHE lessons.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our school. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others.

We role model being respectful to others whilst they strive to demonstrate our school values in their day to day activities and school routines.

All members of the school community are expected to treat each other with respect.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

At Dame Janet Primary Academy we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity.

Our curriculum includes many opportunities to learn about other faiths and cultures and religious festivals are discussed and celebrated from different religions throughout the school.

Assemblies are regularly planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures.

Our RE and PSHE lessons reinforce this.  Inclusion in our school is seamless with strategies in place to ensure children a range of cultures feel settled and supported. Our team of designated safeguarding leads support the diverse families within our community.
